About
A native of Appenzell with a passion for traditional cultural heritage, he chose cooperage as his first profession. Roman Räss completed his second apprenticeship at the woodcarving school in Brienz, where he also settled. From the broad spectrum that is now open to him, he continues to specialize. Its standard products include Nativity figurines and relief sculptures. He is also one of the few butter model makers. He can also easily hand carve different types of lettering into the wood. In the production of naturalistic animal or human figures, Roman Räss devotes himself to classical woodcarving. He is fascinated by how wood can take on ever new forms, or how an age-old form can be rediscovered in a restoration. His works are recognized nationally and internationally. The "Trinity" object, which he developed with the famous Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli, was presented at Homo Faber 2018 in Venice.
