The school for wood carving in Brienz is the only institution in Switzerland where the wood carving trade can be learned. It was founded in 1884 as the “Schnitzlerschule Brienz”. Since 1928 it has been a technical school and training workshop of the Canton of Bern. Today the school offers 24 apprenticeships for wood sculptors EFZ. It is the backbone of wood carving in Switzerland and is responsible for basic training, continuing education and higher professional education.
The vocational school is the only school location in Switzerland for the arts and crafts trades in wood carving, woodworking (majoring in turning and white cooperage), basket and wickerwork design and cooperage. The trainees in Brienz attend four teaching blocks of two weeks each year. During this time they receive vocational and general education lessons. The trainees also complete the inter-company courses (ÜK) at the School for Woodcarving in Brienz.
