From feathered dials to painted faces, these watches are works of art

Long before technical advancements transformed watches into precise timekeeping instruments, they were lavishly decorated mechanical trophies that conveyed the wealth and status of their aristocratic owners. What they lacked in accuracy early pocket watches made up for in artistry.Watchmaking's traditional decorative embellishments — such as bejewelling, engraving and enamelling — are known as métiers d’art. And these vibrant crafts are undergoing a renaissance as the wristwatch becomes a miniature canvas for artists developing creative new techniques often blended with ancient ones.
