Geigenbauschule Brienz

About

Founded in 1944, the Brienz School of Violin Making is the only full-time technical school for violin making in Switzerland. The comprehensive instruction in manual and vocational direction leads the learners to work independently. The four-year training culminates in a certificate as a violin maker/EFZ (with a federal certificate of proficiency). Public cultural events regularly take place in the attic of the 500-year-old Brienzerhaus. The well-endowed specialist library is open to those who are interested. Brienz, with its geographically favorable location at the upper end of Lake Brienz in the heart of Switzerland, is a scenically extremely pretty and at the same time pleasantly quiet place, suitable for concentrated work. Trees from the forests of the surrounding mountain valleys have been used as resonance wood for stringed instruments for centuries. Music festivals bring high-quality performances with well-known performers to the region. Just in time for the 75th anniversary, the Brienz School of Violin Making was able to move into the extended and restored building at Oberdorfstrasse 94 in the summer of 2018. The architecture combines - symbolic for the profession of violin making - old with new, tradition with innovation.
