The bow maker works with Pernambuco and Amorette wood for the stick of the bow, ebony for the frog and various precious materials: silver, gold, mammoth ivory, mother-of-pearl, goat and lizard leather. The stick and the frog are profiled with a plane and a penknife, then fitted with a horsehair bit which will vibrate the strings of the quartet's instruments.
There is no specific training for the bow maker profession. However, a transfer of knowledge could be possible.
In CFC luthier training, some concepts are covered when repairing a bow. You will find more information onorientation.ch .
