The bronzier is a craftsman specialized in the manufacture and finishing of objects in bronze (alloy of copper and tin), copper, or brass (alloy of copper and zinc), intended for decorative or functional uses. The profession includes the creation of various pieces, such as light fixtures, handles, candlesticks and other furniture objects. In the workshop, the bronzier proceeds in several stages: he can melt and cast the metal, then model and chisel it to sculpt patterns, or assemble the different parts by welding or screwing, depending on the project.
Bronzers work both in the creation and restoration of antique and artistic objects, and they often collaborate with artists, cabinetmakers, decorators, and collectors. Traditionally, this profession requires a high level of finishing skills to give objects a smooth, shiny, or patinated appearance, sometimes with silvering or gilding techniques to enhance their aesthetics.
