Glass craftsmanship

The history of the Mudac Contemporary Glass Art Collection began in 1970 at the instigation of a couple of patrons passionate about emerging developments in the use of glass as a material. Remember that this is the largest set after that of the Corning Museum in New York. The General Catalog of the collection was published in 2006. It then covered some 485 works of international provenance, collected between the mid-1960s and 2005. Since then, both the mudac collection and the field of glass creation have undergone an evolution. significant, since we are now witnessing its return to favor with, in particular, designers who are exploring the qualities and challenges presented by this medium. The mudac itself, a place dedicated to design, has opened its whole to productions of this type. Supported by the patronage linked to the museum, the intense prospecting activity and always focused on contemporary creation, justifies devoting a new work to this theme. More than a simple update of the first catalog of 2006, the work to be published in the fall of 2013 is an invitation to examine the topicality and relevance of the use of glass in current creation. And this by means of the acquisitions made since 2006 by the mudac. This is how four contributors from outside the museum were invited to speak on this subject. Coming from different backgrounds, they have in common the links that unite them to the museum’s collection. They are Adriano Berengo, Venetian glass art dealer and instigator of a biennial of contemporary glass, who signs a text with his close collaborator Francesca Giubilei; by Matali Crasset, an internationally recognized French designer whose work is well represented in the ensemble described here; and finally Susanne Jøker Johnsen, Danish artist, teacher and curator. All give us their point of view here, as do Chantal Prod’Hom, director of the mudac, and Bettina Tschumi, curator in charge of the Glass Art Collection. The critical apparatus will include biographical notices, the list of exhibitions, a bibliography and a technical part.
