Le vitrail. Techniques d'hier et d'aujourd'hui

Glass craftsmanship

This book opens the doors to the studio of a glass painter, a creative space finally unveiled. Volts will discover all the stages of the manufacture of a stained glass window, and the way to overcome the many technical constraints in order to transcribe the vision of a painter or yours. Stained glass, a true painting of light, combines the sensitivity of the artist with the technicality of the craftsman. This book reflects this duality, enriched by the complementary experience of Josette Trublard, master glassmaker, and Martine-Callias Bey, art historian; it is the fruit of their fruitful dialogue. The first part gives you the keys to a complex technique, the bases of which date back to the Middle Ages and which has been able to improve from century to century thanks to the inventive genius of artists and practitioners. The description of the tools specific to the glass painter and the materials necessary for the manufacture of a stained glass window is supported by ancient texts, the very ones that have allowed the transmission of knowledge over time. Next, the successive operations that the master glassmaker must follow are carefully described, from taking measurements to installation. The second part covers century after century the history of French stained glass. It shows some of its icons and offers several models drawn from this glass heritage, detailing step by step and in a very readable way the successive painting stages which will allow the complete or partial realization. Thus will continue the transmission of gestures and know-how, particularly of painting on glass.
