Studies relating to the upholsterer’s trade are rare. The word upholsterer designates several activities and trades: an upholsterer is sometimes a worker who upholsters seats and stretches all kinds of draperies in homes, sometimes a merchant involved in the trade of tapestries, carpets, textiles and various pieces of furniture, sometimes still a manufacturer of tapestries and other furnishing fabrics. This leads to ambiguities, confusions that the authors through the studies of the modern and contemporary periods try to clarify by returning to the definition of these trades, their organization and their production, by addressing questions of lexicography, hierarchy, estimation of their importance in terms of number of workers, volume and quality of production.
