Master craftsmen bring out the natural beauty of wood

Michelangelo Foundation - Newsletter, June 2019

Of all the materials available to artisans, wood is perhaps the one with which we can most identify. Like us, it grows, it needs food and water, it is affected by bad weather, disease and trauma, and it dies at the end of its life. No wonder this beautiful natural material is a source of inspiration for many craftsmen. Turned, carved or sandblasted, used to make furniture or marquetry pieces, wood always has a story to tell - a story skilfully interpreted by the master craftsmen who have made it their material of choice.

Bastien Chevalier, wood marquetry artist at Sainte-Croix

The contemporary style of this wood marquetry craftsman based in Sainte-Croix is inspired by graffiti and the work of artists including the American abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock.
