Ob als Zierde, Erinnerungsstück, Statusmerkmal oder Kunstwerk – Schmuck gehört zu den ersten Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des Menschen und ist seit jeher unverzichtbarer Bestandteil jeder Kultur. Je nach Epoche, Mode oder Funktion wird Schmuck aus den unterschiedlichsten Materialien hergestellt, von Naturmaterialien, wie Muscheln oder Tierknochen, über Edelsteine und Metalle bis hin zu Kunststoffen. Welchen Schmuck der Mensch gestaltet, trägt und sammelt, ist immer auch ein Spiegel sozialer und technologischer Veränderungen. Ausgangspunkt der Ausstellung “Schmuck. Material Handwerk Kunst» im Landesmuseum Zürich ist die umfangreiche Sammlung des Schweizerischen Nationalmuseums, ergänzt mit Leihgaben unter anderem aus dem Museum of Art and History in Genf, dem Mudac in Lausanne oder dem MAK in Wien.

Ornamental accessories, souvenirs, symbols of social rank or works of art: jewelry is one of the first modes of expression of human beings and has always been an indispensable element of every culture. Depending on the era, the fashion or the function attributed to them, jewelery is made from the most diverse materials: natural materials, such as shells or animal bones, metals and precious stones or even synthetic materials. Jewels made, worn and collected always also reflect social and technological changes. For the exhibition “Jewellery. materials crafts art", the National Museum of Zurich has drawn on the vast collection of the Swiss National Museum, which it has supplemented with loans from the Museum of Art and History in Geneva, the mudac in Lausanne or the MAK from Vienna.
