Agathe Naito
Ceramist
Lausanne

« At a time of intense tactile activity on screens, it seems urgent to me to provoke, through shaping and space, the sense of touch so dear to ceramics. »

About

Born in 1986 in Morges, Agathe Naito first studied the history of art and the aesthetics of cinema, then trained in ceramics at the School of Applied Arts in Vevey, as well as in Japan. Graduated in June 2016, Agathe Naito joined the L-Imprimerie workshop in Lausanne to continue her research. Since then, his works have revolved around two main themes: the body and food. His works – sometimes shelters, extensions, accessories for the body or simply copies or reflections of himself – question the interactions between the body and its environment.

« My stay in Japan with the great masters of ceramics oriented my approach towards rigorous working methods and a refined aesthetic. »

Agathe Naito creates utilitarian and expressive pieces in ceramic, to which she sometimes combines wood. Talking with the clay on the lookout for half-tones, she exploits the materials in order to obtain games of contrast. His work tends towards a balance between the smooth and the rough, the luminous and the dark. Like haikus, his creations are characterized by an apparent simplicity and sweetness. Formally, the games of contrasts between the textures provoke contradictory perceptions and contribute to the creation of an ambiguous universe.
