Gaston Rosat
Manufacturer of leather straps or collars
Château-d'Oex

« This craft feeds her man but does not enrich him. However, it makes him above all happy to create a beautiful object. »

About

Born in 1949 into a farming family in the Pays-d’Enhaut, as a child Gaston Rosat imagined himself as a saddler or carpenter. At the age of 20, he tried his hand at making a belt for the first time. When he took over the family estate, he devoted his free time to his passion and out of love for this art, through hard work and perseverance, he learned to master the trade.

« In the old days, the first belts were made of wood. Then the patterns evolved, representing finer designs or painted subjects, cows, landscapes or chalets. »

Gaston Rosat’s workshop is located in the family chalet at the entrance to Château-d’Oex. It is here that this discreet man makes leather straps for bells and cowbells that adorn the necks of cows. First, he embroiders the patterns, flowers, arabesques, stars or other patterns desired by the customer, then once these are finished, attaches a leather lace and a band also of leather which he sews to the hand and ends with one or three pompoms on top of the strap.
