She fought a lot, Marina Berts, to make her art known. She believed that she could make a living from it financially, opened a workshop, gave lessons, launched herself via website and conferences in the active promotion of this secular art that is hand embroidery. And if today she is a little resigned to what the future of her profession will be, the sacred fire that has led her to be what she is – an accomplished, qualified and recognized art embroiderer – does not never left. No doubt the harsh Finnish winters of her childhood had something to do with it, but you could say she was practically born with an embroidery needle in her hand. “As far back as I can remember, I have always embroidered,” she says with that smile on her lips that never leaves her, and behind which we can feel the caution of an intelligent woman and sensitive to injustices. which has often been made to understand – wrongly! – that what she was doing was more of a female pastime than a real job.
