On the shores of Lake Thun, Kandahar, the last shoe factory in Switzerland, produces top-of-the-range boots and ankle boots entirely Swiss made. Fritz von Allmen, the founder of Kandahar was also keen on skiing. He knew how much the feet needed to be pampered after a day on the slats. As early as 1945, he produced après-ski products that appealed to the upscale clientele of Swiss ski resorts. Charlie Chaplin and Herbert von Karajan marched in Kandahar. In 1977, Dieter von Allmen, son of Fritz, took over the reins of the company. Today, the founder’s grandson, Manuel, has also joined the manufacture, which is preparing to change premises within two years, still in Gwatt, where it has been established for almost 60 years.
