Small-staff occupations - One in three occupations

Panorama, Franziska Mitterecker, Project Manager at the Ballenberg Course Center, May 2016

In Switzerland, initial vocational training includes around 230 professions, including a good third of so-called low-staff professions, mainly related to traditional crafts. Today, the latter often have to deal with very great difficulties, particularly in the area of vocational training.

What is a “small-staff job”?

Broadly speaking, these are professions with fewer than 100 apprentices nationally, all years combined, and at best one vocational school class per year of apprenticeship. In many cases, there are no new apprenticeship contracts that are signed every year. Often, vocational school classes and inter-company courses take place in several languages, given the low number of apprentices.
