Ticino - I use my grandmother’s frame to create fabrics with a story

Corriere del Ticino, Romina Borla, 29 January 2019

The story of Matteo Gehringer, 36 years old and from Claro (TI), who after studying art and music decided to devote himself to the ancient technique of indigo dyeing.

“What I do seems strange in a world where everything is immediately available. In fact, I work several months on a single fabric, from its creation to the decoration. But there are customers who know how to wait: they are individuals who have good taste and want to buy something special related to their history, architects, interior designers, etc. Their enthusiasm is a source of great satisfaction for me. »

So says Matteo Gehringer, craftsman in Claro who uses the manual loom inherited from his grandmother and has rediscovered the ancestral technique of negative printing (or indigo dyeing), a technique already used in pre-Alpine Lombardy from 16th century to World War II.
