The buttonmaker's job is to design and manufacture artisanal buttons, usually made of natural materials such as mother-of-pearl, wood, horn or corozo, but also of galalith and other synthetic or recycled materials. The craftsman works each button individually, cutting it, shaping it, then polishing it to obtain a personalized finished product. The buttonmaker can also engrave or paint the buttons to add unique aesthetic details, or transform old buttons into accessories or even jewelry.
This profession requires attention to detail, patience and a great sense of creativity, because each button is a unique piece that can transform the appearance of a garment.
Although there is little specialized training to become a buttonmaker, apprenticeship can be done through fashion training or with experienced artisans.
