Potter

The potter's profession, often called potter-ceramicist, consists of shaping ceramic objects, whether utilitarian (such as tableware) or decorative (such as sculptures). The potter mainly uses clay, which he prepares by washing and kneading it to obtain a homogeneous consistency. Using different tools, including a wheel, he shapes his pieces and decorates them before firing them at a high temperature to vitrify the paste and fix the colors or enamels .

The creation process includes several steps, such as throwing, modeling and glazing. Once the pieces are fired, the potter can further embellish them with finishing techniques such as painting or polishing .

The skills required for this profession include a thorough knowledge of ceramic materials, an artistic sensibility and a good sense of decoration. In addition, the potter must often run his own workshop, which requires management and business skills.
