Wheelwright

A wheelwright is a craftsman who specializes in building and repairing animal-drawn vehicles, such as carts, wagons, and antique carriages. His job primarily involves shaping wooden wheels, combining wood and iron to ensure strength and durability. The hub is typically made of elm, the spokes of acacia, and the rims of ash. The wheelwright heats and adjusts the iron hoop to secure it around the wheel, a traditional process that requires great precision.

Historically, this profession was essential in every town and village, but it became rare with the rise of pneumatic tires and the decline in the use of wooden vehicles. Today, wheelwrights mainly respond to orders from collectors or museums, while contributing to the preservation of artisanal heritage.
