« I like to think that I make miniature works of art on display... incognito! »

About

Born in Geneva, Matthias Buckel comes from a village of glassmakers in Germany. After training in theatre, he learned the job of ocularist-glass eye blower from his father. At the end of his apprenticeship, he took over the family workshop and has since created ocular prostheses for Swiss and international patients. He also carries out commissions for artists.

« Glass is a magical material: it is malleable and allows great precision in the work. Its limits force creativity to remain on the alert. »

In Matthias Buckel’s studio, glass tubes and rods of all colors rub shoulders with a blowtorch always ready to ignite. In the drawers, glass eyes seem to watch you and, on the ceiling, mobiles decorate the place. In addition, glass in all its forms is blown here as a family: the Buckel girls follow the family tradition and are trained in the trade.
