« Transitioning to wearing an ocular prosthesis is a sensitive stage in life, which we can soften with our words and our art. »

About

After training for more than seven years with her father Matthias Buckel, Milena Buckel is today a professional ocularist. With her sister Marina, she continues this precious family know-how passed down for four generations. Alongside the creation of ocular prostheses, she collaborates with numerous artists by carrying out specific commissions in the fields of contemporary art, jewelry and even design.

« I am fulfilled, because I have finally found a job in which my attention to detail finds its rightful place. »

In her practice in Valais, Milena Buckel makes tailor-made ocular prostheses. She regularly travels to the four corners of French-speaking Switzerland, with the portable workbench that belonged to her grandfather. In less than two hours, with precision and attention to detail, she delicately blows the glass, creates an iris using tinted glass sticks, places the pupil precisely and gives the shape adapted to the patient's morphology. This know-how was born almost 200 years ago in Lauscha, the German glassblowing village where his paternal family comes from.
