Stefan Gerny
luthier
Brienz

« I think wine and violin making have a lot in common. Honesty plays a very important role for both. »

About

From 1987 to 1990, Stefan Gerny trained as a luthier at the school of violin making in Mittenwald, Germany. After a few years as a journeyman with various luthiers in Switzerland, he founded his own studio in Brienz in 1997. New violins, violas and cellos are made in his workshop. In addition, Stefan Gerny repairs and restores all new and old string instruments.

« Violin making is a sensual profession. The sense of sight is the most important to me. I have to pay attention to symmetries and ensure that both sides of the violin harmonize. »

There is a long way to go before the first violin sound is heard: Stefan Gerny invests 100 to 150 hours of work in a violin he has made himself. It is sawn, planed, bent, glued and carved. The only machine Gerny uses to make violins is the bandsaw. Everything else is best craftsmanship. Gerny deliberately works on the window of his shop - the public is expressly desired. Stefan Gerny does not only sell string instruments in his shop in Brienz: the luthier has fulfilled a long-held dream by also selling wines.
