About
Born in Bulgaria, Mira Stefanova trained in ceramics and visual arts before settling in the Jura region of France in 1990. There, she discovered the papier-mâché technique while working in a workshop that produced, among other things, carnival masks. She was quickly drawn to the endless possibilities this technique offered. Since then, she has made it her artistic language, creating toys, boxes, furniture, decorations, and all sorts of other objects, both artistic and functional.
Thanks to her expertise, which she is one of the few people in Switzerland to possess, Mira Stefanova can create virtually any structure. Each year, she makes nearly 300 masks for the Guggenmusik bands at the Basel Carnival. Cardboard and paper, soaked in various glues, become soft. They are then cut into small pieces which are placed in a plaster mold. Once dry, the form is removed from the mold and then painted.
