Basel - The Yverdonnoise Julie Richoz, who makes handmade furnishing objects, is the winner of one of the Swiss design prizes 2019, in the Products and objects category

The Federal Office of Culture has revealed the names of the 11 winners of the Swiss Art Prizes awarded this evening and those of the 17 winners of the Swiss Design Prizes awarded on Monday on the sidelines of Art Basel.

Julie Richoz’s four award-winning projects bear impressive witness to the designer’s high standards. For each object, she worked in contact with craftsmen, observing and rigorously studying their way of doing things. Through her interest in craftsmanship, she recalls the close links that unite design and craftsmanship and underlines the important role that they are called upon to play in the harmonious development of our environment.

Traditional values are sometimes also new values. Even if the missions change, the design demand remains the same. Because the Swiss Design Award recognizes quality. His focus has always been on people who achieve excellence in their field, whether they photograph, design, mediate, produce or create; whether they collaborate with industries, work in cultural institutions, in crafts or in their own name. Quality design is also one of the forms of beauty. A quality design is part of the context in which it was created. Good design anticipates the future and, at best, stands the test of time. Because only the consistency of our creation will make it sustainable. If we persevere in our work and our production, and we are compelled to use our resources, then aspire to the highest quality, so that this work and this production stand the test of time. Only in this way can we contribute to our culture, our society and meet current challenges. The mission of the Competition remains the same as in 1918: the recognition of accomplished and enduring beauty in the sense of good design.
