The profession of lampshade maker is so rare that there is no dedicated training course. In order to learn how to style lamps to enhance the light, apprenticeship is done only between generations of craftsmen. Report from a Geneva workshop, whose customers sometimes come from very far away to use this know-how.
Lampshade makers pass on the tricks of their trade only in the hushed surroundings of their workshops, since it is no longer taught in schools.
This is how Chloé Gaidioz gradually learned to make lamp ornaments. The young woman was trained by Adelia Da Silva. "Chloé's training went very well. I always told her: When you sew, you have to have your eyes in your fingers," confides the now retired craftswoman. Since 2022, Chloé Gaidioz has taken over Adelia Da Silva's workshop-boutique, thus perpetuating her know-how.
