Carte blanche to David Bielander - Mudac, from February 8 to April 30, 2017
David Bielander, a Swiss designer based in Munich, translates elements of our daily life into jewelry. Shrimps, pineapples, beetles, raspberries are immediately recognizable, but disconcerting. His trompe-l’oeil do not seek to mystify the viewer but to humorously create a game between the person wearing the jewel and the jewel itself. If David Bielander seeks the best material, the most adequate technique to simulate reality, it is when his jewels are worn that they become truly alive. The slug brooches slide to attack the neckline, the snake necklace (Snake) undulates around the neck.
After his apprenticeship as a goldsmith in Basel, Bielander obtained a master’s degree in 2002 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, under the direction of Otto Künzli, master of conceptual jewellery. His influence is perceptible both in the knowledge of materials and in the know-how required by this demanding training. He recently won several prestigious awards: the Munich Förderpreis in 2009; the Herbert Hofmann Prize in 2010 and, in 2012, the Françoise van den Bosch Prize and the Federal Design Prize. The exhibition will present a selection of his works in a scenography specially designed for his pieces, far from the traditional museum showcase.
