Théo Martin
Art cabinetmaker
Payerne

« In my profession, a saying says that to properly restore an old piece of furniture, you should be able to build it using the same techniques as before. »

About

Théo Martin trained in traditional cabinetmaking before moving towards his true passion, artistic cabinetmaking. For two years, he specialized in France with the art master Philippe Walser. In 2017, he returned to Switzerland and set up on his own. In 2019, he obtained the special mention of the jury for the Relève Métiers d’art prize.

« I did an apprenticeship as a traditional cabinetmaker, with contemporary fittings, but I didn’t see myself making my life there. My passion is really antique furniture. »

Théo Martin uses many types of wood for his furniture: apple, holly, maple, cedar or even ebony. Using saws, planes, glues and other tools, he restores and copies old furniture. In 2018, he devoted more than three months to recreating an 18th century writing table by Jean-François Hache. A true masterpiece, it demonstrates its technical mastery.
