Ernst Oppliger
Wood craftsman and paper cutter
Meikirch

« For me, happiness is when hands gently rest on one of my oloids. »

About

Ernst Oppliger, the famous scissor carver, works today with wood, a natural material. The diversity of its species, colours and grain fascinates him and inspires him with ever new working possibilities. With selected woods such as hawthorn, yew, lilac, bog oak, rosewood ... he creates unique objects in his hands, from functional coat hangers to sculptures such as snails and spirals. His great love is especially for the "Oloid", a geometrically complex and wobbly body that he makes in different sizes using a saw and a sander and finishes with "addictive movements".

« Anyone who wants to understand the shape of the oloid must be prepared to think in several dimensions: elementary and mathematically defined as a sphere and a cube, philosophically and emotionally as a heart. »

As a "retired" man, he is now increasingly turning to woodworking. The beauty and diversity of wood, sometimes already rotten, take on their full meaning in his whimsical sculptures, worked with a chainsaw. Carving and grinding also create smaller objects such as coat hangers and geometric shapes.
