Lucerne - Jewelers Championship for Swiss Apprentices

swiss-skills 2019, Christoph Brack, 7 mai 2019

The award ceremony for the Swiss Jewelers Championship took place as usual in Lucerne on May 6, 2019. The big winners were honored and their creations exhibited in the famous Zeugheer hall of the Schweizerhof.

For this edition, 61 creations were submitted to the jury. The Swiss Jewelers’ Championship offers fourth-year apprentices a unique chance to test themselves and prepare optimally for the final apprenticeship exam. The award ceremony took place in the Zeugherr room of the Hotel Schweizerhof in Lucerne. An intense competition that took place over three days in the technical field and a work that extended over two months for the design competition allowed superb jewels to see the light of day. Although the number of participants was lower than in previous years, the quality of the pieces presented once again increased. The prizes awarded are endowed with 1000.- to 4000.- francs. In addition, the jury rewarded with a special mention four outstanding achievements presented within the framework of the design competition.

“Fatum” was the theme for the design competition

(Latin word meaning determination, destiny, prophecy).

Fascinating quality design

The theme of the competition bewitched the participants who unveiled a magnificent spectrum of creativity by presenting 22 design creations. With "Memento Mori", Alba Rivera from the School of Applied Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds created an epaulette with organic movements, poetically symbolizing the death that accompanies us throughout our lives. Ludovic Bonvin from Frieden Creative Design in Thun wins the Concept Prize. With his creation “Kopf oder Zahl” (“Heads or tails”), he proposed a ring symbolically representing a hand that can throw a coin in the air. The Jury Prize was awarded to “Roulette Russe”, a creation by Maria Castellani from the School of Applied Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Worn on the finger, this ring in the shape of a revolver barrel symbolizes a weapon and gives a macabre interpretation of fate. Four participants received special mentions for their excellent performances: Fréderique Burkhalter with "#free periods", Ophélie Frêne with "Miroir mon beau Miroir", Amonrat Huangching with "Chiromancy" (all three from the School of Applied Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds) and Jean Lehnen with “Eternal Renewal” from the Technical School of the Vallée de Joux.
