He was a teacher for a long time. Then, at age 58, he decided to return to school himself to become a carpenter. Now, his apprenticeship completed with top marks, he takes a mixed look at his past.

Was it worth it? Fredy Schwager hesitates. “I now know what an apprenticeship is. He really likes working with wood. He also enjoyed learning something new in a new environment. “But at what cost”, says this 62-year-old man, when he thinks back to this apprenticeship started at 58 years old. “I left a lot there. He spreads his fingers and shows his twisted middle fingers which now almost completely prevent him from playing the violin. The training pushed him to his physical and mental limits. “I realized that I have less resistance. »

He was a very demanding apprentice on himself: last summer he finished best apprentice in the canton of St. Gallen. “I wanted to show that you can learn at any age. It works, don’t be afraid to get started. Only problem, we forget more quickly than before.
