The work of a framer is primarily to protect and enhance a document or object. Knowledge of the works, their style, techniques, and materials is essential for determining the materials or type of beading to use, as well as the mounting method. They create wooden frames for paintings and mirrors, frame images and objects, and gild or color them using various materials (gold or silver leaf, stains, varnishes, etc.). They advise their clients on the styles and materials to use for framing or restoration work.
The artisan carries out their work in a workshop, which often serves as a boutique, and works closely with woodcarvers and restorers of paper, photographs, and paintings. They remain attentive to technical innovations in the fields of tools, machinery, and supplies. Relationships with clients (individuals, collectors, artists, print and painting dealers, or museums) are very important.
Initial vocational training as a framer is acquired through an apprenticeship leading to a CFC (French Vocational Training Certificate). The duration is 4 years. Further training is possible.
